Muncaster Gardens

by Susan Keefe.

Muncaster Gardens in Cumbria hold a special place in my heart as I remember visiting them on my honeymoon many years ago, and subsequently with my children. It is open from mid-February to December 30th.

In spring there are spectacular woodland walks with carpets of bluebells, rhododendrons and camellias, however, described by John Ruskin as the ‘Gateway to Paradise’ its 77 acres contain plants and flowers from all over the world, and are a joy to walk around.

The majestic Muncaster Castle has been the home of the Pennington family since 1208 and contains some beautiful works of art, it is open to visitors, and more details, including prices can be found on the Muncaster Castle website http://www.muncaster.co.uk/castle-and-gardens/

The castle grounds are also the home of the Hawk and Owl centre which can also be visited (at additional cost) where there are flying displays held, more information can be found here http://www.muncaster.co.uk/hawk-owl-centre/

So there is plenty to do and see for all the family at this wonderful location which also has café’s and a gift shop.

If you wish to see more before your visit the castle has its own YouTube channel.
